Second Step
As a district, we use the Second Step program to deliver our classroom guidance lessons. Elementary is an exciting time for growth and development of social-emotional competence as well as the foundation of learning skills. The Second Step program is evidence-based and has been shown to decrease behaviors while promoting self-regulation and a positive mindset. Students will learn about skills for learning, empathy, emotion regulation, and problem-solving. They will watch videos that show them examples of how to use different skills and then will practice using those skills. Along with the Second Step program, lessons on careers, bullying, goal setting, and kindness will be incorporated throughout the year.
Zones of Regulation
When learning about emotion regulation, content from The Zones of Regulation framework will be used to help students gain a deeper understanding about their emotions and how to be in control of them. This framework will teach students different strategies they can use to stay in control of their emotions or regain control of their behaviors/actions. Students will become more independent in emotion regulation and confident in problem solving.
